Arriving in Melbourne
Thank you for travelling so far to celebrate with us. Here are some practical tips to make your arrival smoother. Details change, so please check official sources close to your travel dates.
Getting from the airport
Melbourne Airport (MEL)
Melbourne Airport is in Tullamarine, roughly 25 km north-west of the city. Allow around 30 to 45 minutes to reach the CBD, depending on traffic.
Airport bus, taxi or rideshare
The SkyBus express runs between the airport and Southern Cross Station in the city. Taxis and rideshare (such as Uber) are also available at the airport.
Arriving in Sydney or elsewhere?
If you're flying into another city first, Melbourne is a short domestic flight away. Check baggage rules when connecting between international and domestic flights.
Phones, power and money
Power adapters
Australia uses Type I plugs (230 V). If you're coming from the US, you'll need a plug adapter, and a voltage converter for any device that isn't dual-voltage. Most phone and laptop chargers are.
Phones & data
Check your home plan's roaming rates, or buy an Australian SIM or eSIM. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are the main networks.
Money & tipping
Australia uses the Australian dollar (AUD). Cards and tap-to-pay are accepted almost everywhere, so you'll rarely need cash. Tipping isn't expected.
Rules to know before you land
Entry permission
If you're not an Australian or New Zealand citizen, you'll need an ETA or a visa. Check what you need with the Home Affairs visa finder and apply well ahead.
Biosecurity
Australia has very strict border biosecurity. Declare any food, plant material, or animal products on your arrival card, and when in doubt, declare it or leave it at home.
Driving
Australians drive on the left. If you plan to hire a car, check the rules for your driver's licence before you travel.
Time and weather
Time difference
In late April, Melbourne is on Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10). That's 14 hours ahead of New York (EDT), 9 hours ahead of London (BST) and 8 hours ahead of Central Europe (CEST).
Jet lag
If you can, arrive a few days before the wedding to adjust, and keep Friday evening's welcome drinks as an easy first catch-up.
Weather
Late April is early autumn: usually mild and in the low to mid 20s (°C), but it can turn cool and wet, especially in the hills. Pack layers and a light rain jacket.
In an emergency
Emergency number
Call 000 for police, fire or ambulance anywhere in Australia.
Travel insurance
We recommend arranging travel insurance, including medical cover, before you leave.
